National Princess Week: Pocahontas

26 Apr

Pocahontas is one of those princesses that I’ve come to respect more as I got older. An all-natural gal that loves everything about the world.

I relate to Pocahontas from my days working at a nature park. It really taught me to appreciate nature, especially natural colors and prints. Her style would probably be closes to my weekend style, so this one is kind of easy.

Jungle Green Cargo Shorts
Gap, $49.95
The perks of dressing like a Native American princess? Comfort all day, every day! Little mini jean shorts can be super uncomfortable and bermuda shorts can be just plain ugly. Who hasn’t looked at their guy with jealousy on a particularly humid day when they’re lounging in their gigantic comfortable cargo shorts? Well now it’s our turn. I’m really excited that companies are making a happy medium in short lengths for women now. Before they were either bordering-on-illegal or granny length, but these Gap shorts are a great length and still look cute. And they have a cool little cargo pocket on each side and a frayed hem for those natural-lovers like me.

White Tie-Draped Blouse
Old Navy, on sale! $22.99
Loose, flowy and free! I think that would be Pocahantas’ motto when shopping for clothes. If you’re as outdoorsy and active as this princess is, you obviously don’t want to be held down by tight and binding clothes that stick to you in the heat.

I understand that Pocahantas is a beautiful, tanned, Native American Disney princess, but I’m not. I’m pale and burn after 10 minutes in the sun, so these are the type of clothes I’m desperate for this summer. Things that will be light and loose but will still block me from the sun. Besides, a full day out in the woods means bugs and other natural heeby jeebies. Sometimes sleeves can be like a security blanket.

Gold Feather Bib Necklace
Lucky Brand, $59
This necklace was my complete inspiration for the whole Pocahontas style.  I found it during one of my typical online window shopping excursions and I fell in love. How gorgeous is that? It screams Pocahontas. A gold that’s not too flashy with that subtle blue that could easily be mistaken for some type of stone. Lucky Brand has the best jewelry, and if you go into one of their stores you will always find it on sale. Some of my favorite necklaces and rings came around my one-day stint working as a salesperson for Lucky Brand (No seriously, I only worked there for one day). Lucky Brand has a lot of natural-looking designs and styles that are perfect for the more laid-back and natural fashionista.

Leather Gladiator Sandals
Minnetonka by American Eagle, $60
Obviously we all know that Pocahontas would rather go barefoot than wear shoes, but these are a pretty acceptable option for the alternative. It took me a little while to warm up to the gladiator sandal trend, but once I did I couldn’t get enough. They are so comfortable, especially for someone who hates wearing shoes in the summer (ie: me).  Plus these are really quirky and cute. The suede leaves and glass beads with some real feathers strewn across it have a very Native American feel that I think Pocahontas would approve of.

Faux-Suede Tote
Target, $29.99
Bags with Native American and Aztec patterns are really popular right now, and I’m loving it. They’re all over the place; Target has a million, so does Pac Sun and even Gap. I think it’s fitting for the summer, when you spend most of your free time outside and enjoying all that nature has to offer. I love gigantic bags like this, you can hold all your junk without worrying about fitting everything in on a trip out. Plus, it’s a faux-suede, so it’s animal-friendly, which I think Pocahontas and her many animal friends would appreciate.

National Princess Week: Jasmine

25 Apr

Who didn’t want to grow up in Jasmine’s palace? I would have had no problem hanging out with my pet tiger and my weird, bearded dad in the Taj Mahal shuttin’ down suitors left and right.

When I was picturing what Jasmine would wear today, I definitely pictured something a little on the risky side. I mean, she’s kind of a badass chick, am I right? Definitely one of the toughest Disney princesses out there.

Mini Dress
American Apparel, $40
Homegirl definitely needs a kick into the modern world. Parachute pants? Even with so many vintage trends thriving right now, no one can rock those again. Like I said, I think Jasmine’s a risk taker. She’s not afraid to kick butts to get to her dream guy, and she definitely helped save the day when Jafar went all nutso. She walks around in shoulderless crop tops while a bunch of suitors are dragging their tongues behind her with no shame. So obviously she would have the hootspa to rock such a sexy dress.

Jasmine would be that girl that you walk past that is super hot and super confident and she knows it and so you do you and you can’t help but hate her a little for it. But it’s okay, because she’s Jasmine and she’s awesome.

Gold Belt Buckle and Accessories
Macy’s, $27.99
Some big, gold accessories are more than necessary for this princess. Bordering on the edge of gaudy? That’s Jasmine to me. I fell in love with this belt buckle when I saw it. A perfect accessory right at the top of her waist where the light blue meets the darker blue in that dress. The pattern reminded me of the design of the royal palace, with a clean design that formed something really beautiful.

Jasmine is a girl about town, and she needs something that screams “Arabian Night.” Pair this with some big gold hoops, bangles and layered gold necklaces and you’ve got a pretty sexy day-to-night outfit

Metallic Wedges
Jennifer Lopez for Kohl’s, on sale! $44.99
You’re not going to see Jasmine in a coat and UGGs anytime soon. She’s a summer girl with some mighty fine summer style. And these sandals scream hot and sunny.

Let me just say that I am completely obsessed with these sandals (which is hard for me to admit since I can’t stand Jennifer Lopez). I think I might need them. They’re the perfect color to match with a million things, and they’re sexy without going trashy, which is pretty hard to come by in cork wedges. A great little pinch of metallic for any outfit without looking too flashy.

Tiger Purse
Michael Kors, $178
You’ve got to represent everyone’s favorite tiger Rajah right? I was surprised by how hard it was to find tiger print anything. Apparently cheetahs are cooler or something… whatever.

I have wanted one of these Michael Kors totes for forever. Chic and practical and totally wonderful. Plus, tiger print? Sign me up! It’s the perfect bag for transitioning from spring to summer, and maybe even the fall if you’re feeling dangerous.

Rajah would approve.

National Princess Week: Ariel

24 Apr

Happy Princess Week, everyone! I don’t really know why it’s National Princess Week, but obviously I love it.

To celebrate I’ve decided to piece together items that I think my favorite princesses would wear and own out and about town today. My first pick? Ariel, of course! I feel like she automatically takes the cake for best Disney princess out there, mainly because she’s just the best and she gets to be a mermaid half the time and a princess the other half.

So here are my Ariel picks. Very natural and fresh, and perfect for a summer night out at the shore with your Eric!

Broken-in Straight Khakis
Gap, $49.95
Trust me, I’m just as depressed as you that I don’t have fins. And, yes, at 22 years of age when I still squeeze my feet together and swim like I have fins when no one is watching me at the beach. We as fin-less humans can never be as amazingly wonderful as Ariel  (unless there’s a surgery I don’t know about…) but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress like her!

I buy all my khaki pants from Gap. They come in lengths which is perfect for the 99 percent of women that somehow don’t fit in that annoying “Average” category, they don’t stretch out, and they last forever. So yeah, they may not be fins, but they’re still pretty fantastic.

Strapless Top
Victoria’s Secret, $24.50
This purple top is just the right color to match Ariel’s sea shell bra, but you most likely won’t get really weird stares if you wear this in public. Victoria’s Secret makes some really great quality tops and blouses available online, and they are always on sale or available for some deal. Best of all, this shirt has a built-in bra, which might help you avoid that annoying strapless shirt/dress habit of having to yank the top of every two minutes, so often that it just makes your shirt totally unattractive. Yeah, that’s the reason I hate wearing strapless anything too. The jeans and top combined are so fun and funky, really out-of-the-ordinary in a good way. Like our favorite mermaid!

Starfish Hair Clips
Etsy, $22.50
I have been starfish obsessed over the last few months, and I’ve just been sitting waiting quietly through the spring until I can pounce at the opportunity to wear some myself. I love the way these starfish clips sit in this model’s hair, but if you think I’m about to spend $22 on hair clips you are crazier than Ursula. Craft stores like A.C. Moore and Michael’s sell starfish in bags for $2-$3 in all shapes and sizes. Take those, go buy some bobby pins that match your hair color, and hot glue the starfish to the bobby pin. It’s as simple as that! Ariel was always collecting knick knacks and trying to be resourceful, and seeing as this is National Princess Week why not live like her?

“Little Mermaid” Braided Multicolor Bracelet
Disney Couture, $60
Disney Couture is this fantastic company that makes higher end jewelry basedentirely around Disney princesses and Disney characters. This bracelet is particularly fantastic. I have been seeing gold chain linked bracelets with strings woven into them all over Pinterest lately, and I’ve been totally obsessed ever since. As soon as I saw the bright colors I started humming “Under the Sea,” I can’t help it, the whole bracelet is so sunny and cheery! But the best part of this bracelet is, without a doubt, the little Flounder chain. Who isn’t completely and totally in love with Flounder? I mean, come on, look at that little face!

Metallic Sandals
Old Navy, $18.94
Yes, those are metallic starfish with rhinestones on those flip flops. And yes, I am freaking out as much as you are! A month or so ago I saw these Miu Miu seahorse and crab sandals that I fell in love with, but since I don’t have $950 to spend on a pair of sandals (I’m sorry… who thinks they can charge almost a grand for sandals? Seriously? You know what you could do with that much money? So many more beneficial things than wear sandals.) I just stared from afar. Fortunately, my favorite store, Old Navy, makes a more-sanely priced version, perfect for all the land-locked mermaids like me.

Coral Bib Necklace
Coach, $298
Obviously no one I know is about to drop $300 on a necklace, but it is so perfect that I couldn’t resist. Besides, Ariel is a princess, so I’m sure she could shell out a few bucks on this splurge. Plus, Coach has a ton of sea-inspired pieces in all of their collections right now that are moderately more affordable, like a single coral disk necklace for $128 and a shell and rhinestone chain for $88. The shell necklace is the perfect gift for any Prince Charmings out there that might happen to be reading my blog and need to find a gift to get me for our anniversary gift… I mean… what?

Not Worth the Money: China Glaze Magnetix Polish

31 Mar

A month or so ago I found this really interesting nail polish in Ulta from China Glaze called Magnetix. Basically it was advertised as a nail polish that, when met with a special magnet, would create really unique patterns on the wet nail polish. I instantly though, “oh yeah, I want that,” but it was $10 for the polish and an additional $10 for the magnet and I didn’t feel like spending that much on a product I had never heard of before. So, being the frugal style hound that I am, I went trolling on the Internet for a good deal.

I found the polish for $4 and the magnet for about the same price, but with shipping it came to a whopping $15. And then I played the waiting game.

Don't mind the cuticle mess, I was rushing!

When I got my Magnetix polish and magnet I was so excited that I ripped open the package next to my dad and tried it out on my already-painted nails. The first two fingers I did (see the photo on the left) worked! Basically what you do is paint the polish on and then quickly hold the desired pattern over the polish for 10 seconds. I did the starburst and the kind of chevron pattern thing, and while I did hit the first nail with the magnet I still saw really interesting patterns.

Naturally my next move was to run upstairs, wipe all of the polish off my nails, and paint all of my nails with a pattern, which I decided was going to be the starburst. I was already planning on what I would say on here, how much I loved it and how great it looked. But then I started hitting snags.

The next round didn’t work at all. They all remained blank. Then I realized that hitting the magnet against my nail had become an actual issue with every nail. You couldn’t really avoid it, and it was so frustrating.

I tried over and over again over the course of a few days, but never got a matching pattern that worked for all of my nails. So I’ve ditched it into the bottom of my polish box to come across another day.

Overall I wouldn’t suggest this product to anyone. It’s really expensive and doesn’t give you a really great result. Plus, the colors are super glittery and all very dark, which don’t really work for someone like me who has to show up to work in an office with a bunch of adults 5 days a week. Once I get over my frustration of it I might try applying it to one nail and leaving the rest neutral, but it’s definitely not my style for a full set. If you’re up for spending three hours painting your nails, give it a try, if not, don’t waste the money.

Hey! Look at this Cool Thing I Bought!

I cannot stop looking at my new nail polish, OPI’s Barefoot in Barcelona. I love it so much that I posted a photo and blogged about it while Alex and I were on our way to Whole Foods (don’t worry I wasn’t driving, but I did get a little bit fussy when Alex wouldn’t stop moving so I could take the picture). If you’re a huge fan of neutrals like me, you need to own this color!

Fun Spring Work Style

23 Mar

It is the perfect spring day outside of the walls of my office. I woke up to lots of birds chirping (which, at 7:30 in the morning, isn’t as whimsical and cute as it sounds) and the sun shining, so I knew I had to dress to match.

It’s Friday which is usually a pretty acceptable excuse for me to wear jeans and sneakers, but I just couldn’t resist putting together a really cute, fun work outfit. Of course most of the clothes I’m wearing are from last year so here is a general idea of what I’m wearing today:

Button-Front Pencil Skirt, Old Navy, on sale! $25
I don’t own this skirt, but by the end of the day I might. How amazing is this? As it is still a Friday and I work in a creative, less-confining career, I was looking for more of a dress-down skirt, something I could wear that was work appropriate, comfortable and still a little bit more casual. Obviously this isn’t a skirt you would wear in court, but I sit at a desk all day writing about Southern New Jersey happenings. I’m looking for creative, cute comfort! It’s not too short, it’s not too long and boring and it has really cute tortoise shell buttons going down the middle. Kind of a vintagey vibe, that just so happens to be on sale! Time to grab the credit card!

Croft and Barrow Pleated Blouse, Kohl’s, on sale! $19.99
I found a shirt very similar to this in the exact same color on a Target clearance rack back in September, but it has since been retired from the Merona line.  I realize this shirt is on sale, and I do love a good sale find, but I’m still not one to spend $20 on a tank top. I mean, come on people, it’s a tank top. Still, Kohl’s is a big seller for frugal fashion fans like me, mainly because they dish out so many coupons and have so many sales that you can’t keep your head straight. Lauren Conrad’s line is pretty damn near perfect, too. Plus, it’s a fantastic color for the spring and summer, and I think that although it is sleeveless it is still work appropriate, since the shoulder seam extends almost into a capped sleeve. Tip: Tuck your shirt in! It looks 200 percent classier if you do. I like a nice, tucked in shirt, more than I like most of the people I talk to on a daily basis.

Mossimo Peony Pumps, Target, $24.99
Last night was a magical night for me. Something I’ve dreamed of for what seemed like forever…

My nude heels arrived in the mail.

I know, I know I posted about these shoes before. But they are better than anything I could have wanted.

The heel is much taller than expected, which is great because I have been looking for a taller kitten heel for what seems like forever. It was love at first sight. Usually when I’m at work I like taking my shoes off behind my desk but not today! I love them too much. Look at me, getting all emotional.

Merona Essentials Cardigan Sweater, Target, $22.99
I love this cardigan. I wish it was more acceptable to wear every single day, since I do wear a cardigan pretty much every day anyway. But for some odd reason, people find it gross when you wear the same clothes multiple days in a row… thanks a lot, Obamacare.

In all seriousness though this is a great cardigan and Target is the ideal place to find sweaters. They never stop selling three quarter length and full sleeve cardigans all year and you can almost guarantee that they will be on sale every week. When they are on super-duper sale (as low as $7 per sweater, holla!) I go nuts, buying Target out of pretty much every color available. They are great to pair (fyi: I just spelled pair wrong three times before I finally got it right) with a white shirt and any color pants or skirt when you’re feeling unoriginal.

Brooch the Subject nail polish, Essie, $8
I’m probably going to have to run out soon and buy more of this nude nail polish, because I wear it almost every day. There’s something about neutral painted nails that just screams classy and wonderful to me, which is odd considering this time last year I was pretty much addicted to wearing black and dark blue polishes. I guess we all have to grow up, huh?

My nails aren’t quite long enough to do a really nice, neutral manicure (click here for the tutorial), but they will be soon! Hey, it’s the spring time, you don’t need crazy nail colors. Let your clothes do the talking for you.

My Must-Haves for Spring

20 Mar

Happy Spring everyone! I have been waiting and waiting for the spring to arrive. It is one of my favorite times of the year: bright colors, amazing dresses and skirts, flowers everywhere, sun and no-jacket weather. I go nuts.

Since spring is officially here I have decided to list my favorites for the upcoming season, using pictures pulled straight from Pinterest, since that is my latest complete and utter obsession. Enjoy!

Nude
The color (is it a color? I don’t know) is my latest addiction. I’ve got my nude nails painted right now, and I have been day dreaming about nude heels for about a year, since I saw Kate Middleton rocking the crap out of them so many times this summer. Since Kate Middleton is legally perfect, I knew I had to follow her lead. When the nasty, stupid winter rolled around nude went away, as did my quest for the perfect nude heel.  When I’m bored at work my instant reaction is to online shop, and through my journeys I found these beauties at Target. Cheap, not too high, and with a nice broad heel that is great for long days walking around. I am way too excited for these to arrive at my house. Nude is classy, plain and simple, which is why I need it for this spring.

Rose Gold
I didn’t even know rose gold existed until I made my Pinterest (yes that’s my page and yes you should follow me! I feel no shame in my self-promotion). It’s this fantastic light gold color, with just a tiny bit of pink to it. In my opinion it’s made for spring. When paired with colors like dark blue, pink and turquoise it completely transforms, but it still stays pretty timeless and classic next to diamond or, in my case, rhinestones.

I’ve seen a lot of designers making rose gold watches, like this gorgeous Michael Kors watch. A nice, classy watch makes a professional woman instantly look like an executive, like she is so damn fancy that you shouldn’t even be walking down the same street as her. Plus, I have a crazy amount of respect for any person that refers to a wrist watch as opposed to a phone when looking at the time. Yeah you bet your butt I want one.

Pastel Jeans
Colorful jeans are everywhere right now and I am totally on board. I bought a pair of Old Navy skinny jeans in red a few weeks ago, and now I’m just sitting around trying to register the accurate amount of wait time acceptable before I buy the exact same jeans in another color. Lets face it: pants have always been too boring! Black, khaki jeans… and you’re done. I love this extra splash of color, and the pastel screams spring time.

These jeans I found on Pinterest are the color I really want, a nice salmon-pink. And they’re capris which make them even spring-ier. Pair that with a beige shirt and some rose gold accents, or maybe some baby blue and white, and you’ve got the cutest little outfit imaginable. There’s nothing like brightening up a room with your outfit, especially when the entire world around you is blossoming and bright.

High-waisted Skirts
I embrace the high-waisted skirt on an almost-daily basis. I think that tucking your shirt into any outfit makes it instantly 100 times classier, and embracing where your real waist is creates a totally class look and still gives a woman a great shape. Plus, since I’m short, normal length skirts make me look stumpy, but when I raise it up a few inches and throw on some heels I instantly look a little bit taller. Now that it is spring I can grab some brighter colored skirts and pair them with nice breezy shirts for an easy, comfortable and classy look. Love the high-waisted skirt. It will be your best friend. This fabulous Pinterest find comes from an even-more fabulous blogger named Kendi Everyday. In my personal opinion, vintage dresses and skirts are the reason the sun rises every day. They are flawless. And look! She’s got the nude heels. Perfection.

Fruity Beers
It’s time for bright colors and bright flavors. Oh I know, boys will judge you if you like fruity beers, but I’m a lady, I can’t resist something a bit pretty!

I can suggest some great fruity beers: Dogfish Head’s Noble Rot and of course Strongbow Cider are up there, but one particular seasonal beer makes my spring and summer complete: 21 Amendement Brewery‘s Hell or High Watermelon. A light and airy tasting watermelon wheat beer that is pretty much the spring and summer in a can. It’s one of those beers that you crave on a hot, sunny day while stuck at your desk at work (yes, I’m talking about today in my case)
