National Princess Week: Kate Middleton

28 Apr

It all comes down to my main princess, the only living, breathing princess of my posts: Kate Middleton.

Last spring, just before I graduated from college, my boyfriend and I stayed up to watch the Royal Wedding on April 29. Unfortunately, as much as I fought I ended up passing out about 2 minutes before the big, famous kiss at Buckingham Palace, but I got to see the glamour of the entire wedding. Kate Middleton’s wedding style stuck with me. Elegant and timeless. On a day when literally the entire world was looking at one misstep to continuously repeat all over the tabloids and she got it perfect. She didn’t miss a beat. And she still hasn’t. I love this girl. I love her style. She is the perfect princess.

Ronni Nicole Dress
Kohl’s, on sale! $54
When I was looking for a dress for my Kate inspiration my mind went right to her engagement photos. She had on a beautiful blue dress, similar to the one here but much more expensive.

The Duchess of Cambridge has the most perfect body in the world. It’s not even fair. She gets the prince and the body? Come on, universe! Anyway, in almost every dress I’ve ever seen her in she finds a way to accentuate the thinnest part of her waist, then has the bottom  hem flow out widely. And I don’t know if I’ve ever seen her wear something sleeveless. Pretty much the exact same shape as the dress here. I don’t know if I could ever wear a dress like this; I’m pretty sure you have to have a damn-near perfect body to do it, but I can dream right?

Diana’s Engagement Ring
Amazon, $49.99
Since Will and Kate got engaged I have come close to buying this ring or one of the other million replicas available online way too many times. I really need to own it. Walk around with this giant rock, and when no one is looking slip it on my left hand ring finger and pretend that I’m a soon-to-be-princess. Don’t pretend that you don’t want to do that too. I respect the princess like crazy, because she knows exactly what to do in her situation. She is the next big thing in the media, while trying to balance pleasing her royal family and pleasing the public who is still madly in love with her husband’s late mom, who her in-laws weren’t too crazy of. Can you spell soap opera? Having lived in England I can tell you that the British press is totally ruthless. Kate hasn’t missed a beat. She must drive the paparazzi crazy.

Nude Heels
Payless, $29.99
Kate was my inspiration for my nude fashion obsession. She makes conservative and old-fashioned look so good. She has been rocking nude heels like nobody’s business for the last year and I needed to get in on that action.

Since then my life has been nude heels and nude nail polish and non-flashy jewelry and cardigans. I feel like a Republican’s wife sometimes with the crazy amount of neutrals I have filled my life with. But I love it. You can never not feel classy and sophisticated in a pair of nude heels. I might be giving the princess a run for her money, if I do say so myself.

Nude Stockings
Pretty Polly, £5.25
I feel like Kate’s stockings are one of her biggest claims to fame. I remember how crazy people went when she showed up in Los Angeles, the land of all things skimpy, last summer with them on. I, for one, loved it. I am crazy pale, and I don’t tan, so really good stockings add an extra bit of color to my disgustingly pale legs. Anything that gives me an excuse to hide my sheer skin is good for me. These are the stockings that Kate is alleged to wear. The cost comes to about $8 (maybe a little bit more, I’m still used to converting in the year 2009) and best of all, they are actual nylons. If you’re a vintage lover, this website is for you. They have nylons with the seems still stitched up the back of each leg! Not to mention all their other really unique designs.

Sapphire Solitare Necklace
Target, on sale! $31.99
The princess had a very similar necklace to this in her engagement photos, and it’s so fitting of her. Simple, but stunning. Enough to shine in a crowd, but not enough to actually draw a crowd.

Kate proves with almost everything she wears that you don’t need to be glitzy and over-the-top to look phenomenally good. You just need to learn how to rock a few well-selected items. I always try to be inspired by her, which is why she makes the perfect princess to end my princess week with. There’s no better princess out there.

National Princess Week: Ariel

24 Apr

Happy Princess Week, everyone! I don’t really know why it’s National Princess Week, but obviously I love it.

To celebrate I’ve decided to piece together items that I think my favorite princesses would wear and own out and about town today. My first pick? Ariel, of course! I feel like she automatically takes the cake for best Disney princess out there, mainly because she’s just the best and she gets to be a mermaid half the time and a princess the other half.

So here are my Ariel picks. Very natural and fresh, and perfect for a summer night out at the shore with your Eric!

Broken-in Straight Khakis
Gap, $49.95
Trust me, I’m just as depressed as you that I don’t have fins. And, yes, at 22 years of age when I still squeeze my feet together and swim like I have fins when no one is watching me at the beach. We as fin-less humans can never be as amazingly wonderful as Ariel  (unless there’s a surgery I don’t know about…) but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress like her!

I buy all my khaki pants from Gap. They come in lengths which is perfect for the 99 percent of women that somehow don’t fit in that annoying “Average” category, they don’t stretch out, and they last forever. So yeah, they may not be fins, but they’re still pretty fantastic.

Strapless Top
Victoria’s Secret, $24.50
This purple top is just the right color to match Ariel’s sea shell bra, but you most likely won’t get really weird stares if you wear this in public. Victoria’s Secret makes some really great quality tops and blouses available online, and they are always on sale or available for some deal. Best of all, this shirt has a built-in bra, which might help you avoid that annoying strapless shirt/dress habit of having to yank the top of every two minutes, so often that it just makes your shirt totally unattractive. Yeah, that’s the reason I hate wearing strapless anything too. The jeans and top combined are so fun and funky, really out-of-the-ordinary in a good way. Like our favorite mermaid!

Starfish Hair Clips
Etsy, $22.50
I have been starfish obsessed over the last few months, and I’ve just been sitting waiting quietly through the spring until I can pounce at the opportunity to wear some myself. I love the way these starfish clips sit in this model’s hair, but if you think I’m about to spend $22 on hair clips you are crazier than Ursula. Craft stores like A.C. Moore and Michael’s sell starfish in bags for $2-$3 in all shapes and sizes. Take those, go buy some bobby pins that match your hair color, and hot glue the starfish to the bobby pin. It’s as simple as that! Ariel was always collecting knick knacks and trying to be resourceful, and seeing as this is National Princess Week why not live like her?

“Little Mermaid” Braided Multicolor Bracelet
Disney Couture, $60
Disney Couture is this fantastic company that makes higher end jewelry basedentirely around Disney princesses and Disney characters. This bracelet is particularly fantastic. I have been seeing gold chain linked bracelets with strings woven into them all over Pinterest lately, and I’ve been totally obsessed ever since. As soon as I saw the bright colors I started humming “Under the Sea,” I can’t help it, the whole bracelet is so sunny and cheery! But the best part of this bracelet is, without a doubt, the little Flounder chain. Who isn’t completely and totally in love with Flounder? I mean, come on, look at that little face!

Metallic Sandals
Old Navy, $18.94
Yes, those are metallic starfish with rhinestones on those flip flops. And yes, I am freaking out as much as you are! A month or so ago I saw these Miu Miu seahorse and crab sandals that I fell in love with, but since I don’t have $950 to spend on a pair of sandals (I’m sorry… who thinks they can charge almost a grand for sandals? Seriously? You know what you could do with that much money? So many more beneficial things than wear sandals.) I just stared from afar. Fortunately, my favorite store, Old Navy, makes a more-sanely priced version, perfect for all the land-locked mermaids like me.

Coral Bib Necklace
Coach, $298
Obviously no one I know is about to drop $300 on a necklace, but it is so perfect that I couldn’t resist. Besides, Ariel is a princess, so I’m sure she could shell out a few bucks on this splurge. Plus, Coach has a ton of sea-inspired pieces in all of their collections right now that are moderately more affordable, like a single coral disk necklace for $128 and a shell and rhinestone chain for $88. The shell necklace is the perfect gift for any Prince Charmings out there that might happen to be reading my blog and need to find a gift to get me for our anniversary gift… I mean… what?

Hey! Look at this Cool Thing I Bought!

I cannot stop looking at my new nail polish, OPI’s Barefoot in Barcelona. I love it so much that I posted a photo and blogged about it while Alex and I were on our way to Whole Foods (don’t worry I wasn’t driving, but I did get a little bit fussy when Alex wouldn’t stop moving so I could take the picture). If you’re a huge fan of neutrals like me, you need to own this color!

Fun Spring Work Style

23 Mar

It is the perfect spring day outside of the walls of my office. I woke up to lots of birds chirping (which, at 7:30 in the morning, isn’t as whimsical and cute as it sounds) and the sun shining, so I knew I had to dress to match.

It’s Friday which is usually a pretty acceptable excuse for me to wear jeans and sneakers, but I just couldn’t resist putting together a really cute, fun work outfit. Of course most of the clothes I’m wearing are from last year so here is a general idea of what I’m wearing today:

Button-Front Pencil Skirt, Old Navy, on sale! $25
I don’t own this skirt, but by the end of the day I might. How amazing is this? As it is still a Friday and I work in a creative, less-confining career, I was looking for more of a dress-down skirt, something I could wear that was work appropriate, comfortable and still a little bit more casual. Obviously this isn’t a skirt you would wear in court, but I sit at a desk all day writing about Southern New Jersey happenings. I’m looking for creative, cute comfort! It’s not too short, it’s not too long and boring and it has really cute tortoise shell buttons going down the middle. Kind of a vintagey vibe, that just so happens to be on sale! Time to grab the credit card!

Croft and Barrow Pleated Blouse, Kohl’s, on sale! $19.99
I found a shirt very similar to this in the exact same color on a Target clearance rack back in September, but it has since been retired from the Merona line.  I realize this shirt is on sale, and I do love a good sale find, but I’m still not one to spend $20 on a tank top. I mean, come on people, it’s a tank top. Still, Kohl’s is a big seller for frugal fashion fans like me, mainly because they dish out so many coupons and have so many sales that you can’t keep your head straight. Lauren Conrad’s line is pretty damn near perfect, too. Plus, it’s a fantastic color for the spring and summer, and I think that although it is sleeveless it is still work appropriate, since the shoulder seam extends almost into a capped sleeve. Tip: Tuck your shirt in! It looks 200 percent classier if you do. I like a nice, tucked in shirt, more than I like most of the people I talk to on a daily basis.

Mossimo Peony Pumps, Target, $24.99
Last night was a magical night for me. Something I’ve dreamed of for what seemed like forever…

My nude heels arrived in the mail.

I know, I know I posted about these shoes before. But they are better than anything I could have wanted.

The heel is much taller than expected, which is great because I have been looking for a taller kitten heel for what seems like forever. It was love at first sight. Usually when I’m at work I like taking my shoes off behind my desk but not today! I love them too much. Look at me, getting all emotional.

Merona Essentials Cardigan Sweater, Target, $22.99
I love this cardigan. I wish it was more acceptable to wear every single day, since I do wear a cardigan pretty much every day anyway. But for some odd reason, people find it gross when you wear the same clothes multiple days in a row… thanks a lot, Obamacare.

In all seriousness though this is a great cardigan and Target is the ideal place to find sweaters. They never stop selling three quarter length and full sleeve cardigans all year and you can almost guarantee that they will be on sale every week. When they are on super-duper sale (as low as $7 per sweater, holla!) I go nuts, buying Target out of pretty much every color available. They are great to pair (fyi: I just spelled pair wrong three times before I finally got it right) with a white shirt and any color pants or skirt when you’re feeling unoriginal.

Brooch the Subject nail polish, Essie, $8
I’m probably going to have to run out soon and buy more of this nude nail polish, because I wear it almost every day. There’s something about neutral painted nails that just screams classy and wonderful to me, which is odd considering this time last year I was pretty much addicted to wearing black and dark blue polishes. I guess we all have to grow up, huh?

My nails aren’t quite long enough to do a really nice, neutral manicure (click here for the tutorial), but they will be soon! Hey, it’s the spring time, you don’t need crazy nail colors. Let your clothes do the talking for you.

Try This! The Naked French Manicure

25 Feb

While perusing Pinterest one day I found this really interesting nail style that I knew I had to have. Several nail companies make a clear, matte polish that goes onto your nails as a top coat. So today after work I stopped by a nearby beauty supply store to get my hands on some matte polish.

South Jersey ladies: you have to stop by an Image Beauty. Anyone outside of my area I suggest finding a discount beauty center for all of your nail polish needs. These places have much better prices on products you usually go to Target or Ulta to buy.  OPI polish and Essie, normally eight or nine bucks, for six dollars? I’ll take it. For my nails I bought Essie’s Matte About You top coat and Brooch the Subject, which was a really pretty nude.

Of course I started with two coats of the nude polish. That’s the best part about this Essie polish, its really opaque. I spent a long time in the store looking for a nude polish that wouldn’t require a million coats and I found it! After I let the polish dry completely (keyword: completely) I followed that with one coat of the matte polish. It goes on fast and seems to dry faster, but it is like another coat of polish and it gets really sticky, so let that dry again before moving onto anything else. If you look at the photo I posted the nail (on my incredibly dry hands!) on the left is a regular 2 coats of polish, and the one on the right is after a coat of matte polish. I love it!

Now comes the manicure part. The beauty supply stores sell strips that serve as markers for manicures, but I’m not about to pay 4 bucks for sticky paper when I have perfectly good scotch tape at home! When it comes to little details, I suck. I just don’t have the patience to pay attention, so you know that if I can do this you most certainly can. Simply pull off about an inch of tape and cut one edge in the shape of your nail. Then place it slightly below the tip of your nail to create the space where a normal French manicure would be white. Then take your nude polish and paint over the space you just created, peel the tape off, and let dry!

Voila! A very simple, very sophisticate style. I’m not too into flashy, over-the-top nails, but I do like to get creative with my nails, so this is beyond perfect for me. I feel like this would be a great nail style for a wedding party because it’s clean and chic. I’ve seen this done with black polish and dark blue, which would look really subtly sexy for a night out on the town.

Matte nail polish was definitely one of my best buys. It’s totally unique, but not flashy and obnoxious. I can’t wait to see the reactions I get!

Effortless, Comfy Work Style.

16 Feb

I’m not going to lie, I feel good today. I was a big fan of the outfit I pulled together this morning, and that good feeling only exploded into a great feeling when I walked into the break room at lunch and was greeted with a flood of “WOOOOOOOWS!!” by the fabulous sales ladies in my office. So I’m passing my totally easy, super comfortable and, of course, crazy affordable outfit onto you!

Charmeuse Tab Sleeve Dress
$34.94 at Old Navy (on sale for $19)
I know, I know I’m a walking advert for Old Navy, but this is without a doubt the best buy I have made in a very long time. While shopping for a Valentine’s Day outfit I stumbled on this $19 sale dress (that’s right, head into the store and you might just find it on sale!). I figured I’d buy it in case my planned outfit didn’t work out and then return it next week if I wasn’t crazy about it. Oh, boy. This is the most flattering and comfortable dress I own, and it still looks professional. Plus I have gotten so many compliments on the color alone.

Kylie wedge pump in black
$26.99 at Payless
I’m a very cheap, sale-oriented shopper, so spending full price on a pair of shoes is kind of painful to me, even if it is only $26.99. But I am in love with these shoes! I wear them at least twice a week because they’re comfortable and they go with almost everything. They’re my go-to wedges for when I feel like wearing a pair of skinny jeans, and they have never failed me!

Minicci open weave gray tights
$5.99 at Payless
I have had these tights sitting in my drawer for a month or so, because tights and I don’t really get along. I usually get them up to about my knee before they catch on my fingernail or toe nail, get a hole and run up my entire leg, leaving me tight-less and late for work. Somehow over the course of a full work day I have yet to make a single rip in these guys! And they are crazy comfortable, not stuffy and confining like usual tights. Plus they add a little pattern to an otherwise patternless look!

Valentine’s Day Style

14 Feb

Valentine’s Day served as a helpful reminder to me that I have a depressing lack of pink in my wardrobe. So I decided to cute things up a little bit this holiday and get dressed up to match the occassion.

I didn’t realize that almost my entire Valentine’s Day ensemble was Old Navy until I decided to do this post. All I knew was that it was entirely on sale. I kicked things off with these absolutely fabulous red jeggings/jeans. I ordered them online, since I have to get all my pants in short because, well, I’m short, but when I was in store yesterday they had one million colors and they were on sale!

They are insanely comfortable and they fit great. I am in love. I paired them with my sparkle Target flats.

The top was where I struggled. As I mentioned, my closet was seriously lacking on pink. I don’t understand what happened in my life that led me to wear only six million shades of gray (I do love gray…) but I could see I had a problem. I needed to find a way to include pink with my jeans but not go overboard. So I found this great white and black striped crew neck sweater. Super soft, long sleeved, just a little big around the waist. And best part of all?

I only payed $9.99 for it.

I finished it off with a pink camisole and… tada! Valentine’s Day ready!

A totally adorable, comfy and work-appropriate outfit, all for around $25.

So a pretty perfect Valentine’s Day matched with a pretty perfect outfit. I have to say, dressing the part really makes the day a lot more fun. Every time I looked at my pink and red clothes I felt more festive and more happy with the holiday.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
